In the Three Kingdoms period, Zhuge Liang used stratagem of the empty city, tricking Sima Yi's hundreds of thousands of troops into retreating without fighting and was calm. A wise man, the more urgent and dangerous he is in, the calmer he is needed. Only when he is calm can he come up with a way to deal with a situation.

沈得住氣，這才是智者

五代時，馮道與和凝同在中書省任職，兩人交情甚厚。有一天，馮道穿了新買的鞋子到和凝家中拜訪。和凝一看，這雙鞋子和他數日前叫僕人買回來的那雙不是一模一樣嗎？於是和凝就問馮道：「你這雙鞋子是多少錢買的？」
馮道一聽，不慌不忙的舉起右腳，說：「五百塊錢。」和凝一聽，怒氣沖沖的對著身旁的僕人罵道：「一模一樣的鞋子，為什麼你說要一千元呢？」
此時，馮道又緩緩的舉起左腳說：「這只也是五百塊錢。」和凝一聽，霎時滿臉通紅，深為自己沈不住氣感到羞愧。
沈不住氣，往往不能冷靜的判斷是非，造成憾事。歷史上，很多戰爭原本有利的一方，往往被對方的激將法激怒，沈不住氣，貿然出兵，而使局勢逆轉。在佛門裡，一些出家人還俗，也是等不及，沈不住氣，因此沈淪世海。
沈得住氣，是一種修養的工夫，東晉淝水之戰的名將謝安，當他正與朋友下棋時，得知侄兒謝玄力克敵人，獲得勝利，但他不形於色，依然冷靜下棋。沈得住氣，是一種忍辱的智慧，英烈千秋的張自忠，受命與敵人周旋，卻被誤認為賣國賊，但他沈得住氣，最後終能完成使命，留芳千古。
三國時代，諸葛亮以空城計騙過司馬懿的數十萬大軍不戰而退，也都是沈得住氣。有智慧的人，越是緊急危難的時候，越是冷靜沈著，唯有在鎮靜中才能想出應付事變的方法。
所謂「飯未煮熟，不要妄自一開；蛋未孵熟，不要妄自一啄。」拳頭不要隨便打出去，要沈得住氣，才有力量；眼淚不要隨便流出來，要沈得住氣，才能化悲憤為力量。
現在台灣經濟衰退，全國人民應該沈得住氣，共體時艱，共同奮鬥，共度難關，不要你怪我，我怪你，如此只有互相抵銷力量。
沈得住氣，也不是沒有是非觀念，而是冷靜沈著，俟機而動。紀渻子訓練鬥雞，說明一隻上等的鬥雞，不是只會虛張聲勢，自狂自傲，如此遇到強者，往往不堪一擊！反而氣定神閒，從容安詳，呆若木雞，最後總能不戰而勝。
因此，吾人在日常生活中，縱使遇到挫折，或有不公平之事，不可以衝動，更不能意氣用事，應該冷靜沈著，要沈得住氣，才能理性的思考解決之道，這才是智者所為。
