@Lifestyle: Freeganism, Minimalism And Downshifter Similarities And Differences

Image from: https://unsplash.com/photos/4aSzh4YhC2A Below are my opinions.  For the above-mentioned lifestyles, they have a lot in common and some minor differences when compared side by side. There are no fixed guidelines on choosing which lifestyle is the best. It depends on what suits you and adjusts or fine-tunes accordingly. Similarities for all three lifestyles: All are environmentally friendly to Mother Earth due to reducing the use of natural resources and less pollution.  Slow down your pace in life and mind. More intentional spending to prevent impulsive spending habits.  Less is more. Less money, busy, stress, debts, boredom, emptiness, hopelessness... To have more time, enjoyment in your life, good experiences, and memories, achievement, success, Get out of the rat race.  Simplicity in terms of living and way of life. Managing your personal finance. Spend less, save more so can relax early. Just needs more planning and consciousness of your spendings and ...

iSAVvy: Live Not Within But Below Your Means

Too bad I don't have a license and there is no such van here. Image from : https://unsplash.com/photos/xr-y6Ruw7K8?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditShareLink Live below your means doesn't mean comprising your living standard but having a sustainable lifestyle with what you have. Is a simple way of life people desire.  —— Dickson Idlier Live below your means is spending less money than you earn (budget management) but to me, it is living with bare essentials. Similar to minimalism  minus declutter your stuff to the minimum. Another aspect is be as debt-free as possible.  Will I be like a cheapskate person if I live below my means? Yes in a certain sense but you are smiling with a fat bank account while others slogging their lives over money. Different people perceive differently what are bare essentials. Below is an idea of living with my bare essentials: Food . We need to eat to live. Try to buy fresh ingredients and cook mo...

BrainTeasers: Most bizarre Find

When dumpster diving, you may find interesting stuff as you salvage through the green and blue trash bins and any items people left at the void decks. Here I will show you my most bazzar find. My most bazaar find is ... a Living   11-inch Freshwater Stingray .  My bazzar find live stingray in my 3 ft aquarium The 11 inch freshwater stingray was found in a broken 3ft tank beside the rubbish chute and slightly hidden by some kids' clothes laid on top of the tank. (I suspect the owner doesn't want anyone to notice it) Initially, I was only interested in the kids' clothes until I noticed it inside. When I saw it breathing, it surprised me. I was wondering how can I rescue it. I thought of releasing it in any pond or canals, but none is nearby (luckily as it might be a bad thing to do so). Finally, I decided to bring it home. I used a kids top to hold the tail and put it into a basket that was lying nearby. I carried the basket to my home.  Luckily, after the rough journey hom...

@Lifestyle: My Reasons Becoming A Partial-Freegan

  Reject mindless consumerism I chanced upon freeganism when reviewing my investments. I just left my stressful job (details in another post ). I dreamed to retire from work by age 45 but had no concrete plans then. I felt freeganism is a path to fulfil my early retirement dream. The idea behind freeganism is to get what you need for free and use your money only on necessities. I joined the "Freegan in Singapore" Facebook group, where Colin Lau's articles on freeganism impress me. I started dumpster diving and managed to rescue mostly merchandise and occasionally food. I spend money on bills, insurance premiums and food. Below are my reasons for becoming a partial-freegan: Sick of work.  Mainly due to office politics, backstabbing, lack of job satisfaction and Information Technology (IT) industry are always fire-fighting. Felt physically and mentally tired. Low pay jobs have their stress and problems. Want to quit working for money forever.  No idea why I earn money....

@Lifestyle: Uniquely Freegans In Singapore

Image from :  https://freeganinsingapore.wordpress.com This post discusses the Freegans in Singapore (FIS) differences compared to other countries. Don’t totally rejects consumerism FIS doesn’t reject consumerism due to laws and a different mindset compared to other countries’ freegans. Basic human needs like food, shelter and medical are main areas that FIS still have to pay. Even if you can find expired food or vegetables, FIS in general, like me, still spend money on food, like cultured milk drinks, join social gatherings and food that we liked. It is illegal to pitch tents and living in beaches and parks or any public places. For shelter in land-scarce Singapore, we stay in government flats. Even after paying the loan for the flat, there are also recurring expenses like utilities, taxes and fees. Medical services are expensive, even with government grants. So FIS pay insurances. Working Less Not all freegans in Singapore can stop working. For those who are not working, we are l...

@Lifestyle: Freeganism

Image from: http://www.freegan.at/en/kontakt.htm Freeganism is an ideology of limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources, particularly through recovering wasted goods like food and merchandise. Freegans—at least in theory—avoid consumerism in general. Freeganism is often presented as synonymous with “dumpster diving” for discarded food, although freegans are distinguished by their association with an anti-consumerist and anti-capitalist ideology and their engagement in a wider range of alternative living strategies, such as voluntary unemployment, squatting in abandoned buildings, and “guerrilla gardening” in unoccupied city parks. Above information is extracted from Wikipedia. Freeganisim reduces consumption by finding useful or edible things from trash. A form of recycling and exchange for cash for most freegans. It is the most environmental friendly lifestyle, except stone age. —— Dickson Idlier Freeganism, in my opinion, is an extreme lif...

@Livestyle: Minimalism

Image from:    https://unsplash.com/photos/QZGQO3NvsLo Minimalism is keeping what is essential and getting rid of the rest. A state of mind, going beyond materialistic objects, relationships, mentality and the way of life. —— Dickson Idlier Popular quotes from famous minimalists: Minimalism is a tool to rid yourself of life’s excess in favour of focusing on what’s important—so you can find happiness, fulfilment, and freedom.  —— TheMinimalists Minimalism as a philosophy. —— Colin Wright Minimalism is a way of eschewing the non-essential in order to focus on what’s truly important, what gives our lives meaning, what gives us joy and value. —— Leo Babauta I got to know minimalism after I found freeganism. Its concept and ways resonate with me but are not suitable for me in a way. I can only choose to adopt their concepts mentally for now.  Current society is overwhelmed with busyness, buying or upgrading stuff, getting into deeper debt, make more money and clutter our ...

@Lifestyle: Downshifting

  Image from: https://unsplash.com/photos/pUvMN3j2kGc “Downshifting means working towards simple living by making conscious choices to leave materialism behind and move on to a more sustainable lifestyle.” — Choosing Voluntary Simplicity(1) “The act of reducing one’s standard of living for an improved quality of life.” — Investopedia(2) “Downshifters are people who adopt long-term voluntary simplicity in their life. They accept less money through fewer hours worked in order to have time for the important things in life. Downshifters also place emphasis on consuming less in order to reduce their ecological footprint … Basically downshifters seek a life filled with more passion and purpose, meaning, fulfillment and happiness. A life to look back on with no regrets. Downshifters want to slow down at work in order to ‘upshift’ in others areas of their lives. For most people the change to a slow life through downshifting comes after a long quest for true happiness and fulfillment.” — Sl...
