Below are my opinions.

For the above-mentioned lifestyles, they have a lot in common and some minor differences when compared side by side. There are no fixed guidelines on choosing which lifestyle is the best. It depends on what suits you and adjusts or fine-tunes accordingly.

Similarities for all three lifestyles:

  • All are environmentally friendly to Mother Earth due to reducing the use of natural resources and less pollution.
  • Slow down your pace in life and mind.
  • More intentional spending to prevent impulsive spending habits.
  • Less is more. Less money, busy, stress, debts, boredom, emptiness, hopelessness... To have more time, enjoyment in your life, good experiences, and memories, achievement, success,
  • Get out of the rat race.
  • Simplicity in terms of living and way of life.
  • Managing your personal finance. Spend less, save more so can relax early. Just needs more planning and consciousness of your spendings and investments.

Differences for specific lifestyles:

  • Dumpster diving is a unique activity for freeganism. Getting food and merchandise for free from the dumpster. Depending on which country you live in, might not be practical.
  • Freeganism is the only lifestyle that rejects consumerism. Making it not easy to follow, like in Singapore.
  • Freeganism is very much about living relying on nature but since nature is so badly affected by humans, it is not easy to do this in a practical sense, even though it is not impossible.
  • Decluttering is hardest for minimalism as it focuses on what you keep is essential and getting rid of the rest. Then declutter relationships, your mind, and any stuff in your life.

From easiest to most difficult lifestyle is Downshifting   ➜ Minimalism ➜ Freeganism. In my opinion, the easiest to start is downshifting lifestyle, where most of the similarities are achieved for having a simple lifestyle and mindset. The other two lifestyles are more challenging but what you achieve is greater, depending on what you are after.

iSAVvy: Financial Independence — The Lows

Low on cash? What have you been spending on? Image from: Photo by  cottonbro  from  Pexels Financial independence is essentially able to sustain your lifestyle with the amount of money you have without working. This is one of life’s most difficult problems everyone has and many are unable to overcome it. —— Dickson Idlier I am not a financial consultant. What I wrote here is purely my opinion. The road to my financial independence is essentially be low on debts and expenses and high in investments and assets. How to control your expenses and debts depends on what is essential to you. I prefer rejecting any instalments (debts) whenever possible and have a simple lifestyle. After these, then build up your savings, investments and assets. This is how I did without many details but I think it is the easiest to get started. Ways to keep a low debt and expenses: Food is essential but not all kinds of food. Try keeping food expenses low but not compromising on quality. Reduce ...

IdlierStories: Muddy Water

Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, “I am thirsty. Please get me some water from that lake there”. The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing the lake right at the edge of it. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?!” So he came back and told the Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink”. So, the Buddha said, let us take a little rest here by the tree. After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake. This time he found that the l...
